My name is Katie Bellwood and I am a Year 10 student at Jersey College for Girls. I have spent the past two weeks at Law At Work for my Project Trident, which is where every 15-year-old, island wide, does work experience for two or three weeks at a business, school, charity, hairdressers … the list goes on. It is a great experience for gaining confidence, knowledge and an insight into life in the workplace.
When I arrived on Monday, I faced my first challenge – walking into the office! It was very nerve-racking and my heart was racing but I soon realised I had nothing to worry about. I was given a timetable showing who I would be shadowing each day. This was very helpful as I always knew what I would be doing each day when I walked through the door.
The team at LAW were so kind and welcoming to me and it really made my experience one of a kind. I was treated like a member of the team and saw every aspect of the work that they do – from HR to Health and Safety. I even got to spend a day at an employment tribunal and a morning doing Health and Safety checks on building sites.
Over the two weeks, I would have to say that the biggest challenge I faced was answering the phone! I was terrified of saying the wrong thing or not being able to hear the person on the line. However, after a couple of times, I became much more relaxed with the idea. The best part of my experience would have to be moving around the office, spending half a day with each member of the team. I have learnt about the laws and legislation in Jersey and how Law At Work help and advise businesses to comply with these laws and deal with situations with their employees.
I would like to thank the team at LAW for the amazing experience I’ve had and for being so kind and welcoming.
