This privacy statement explains how Law At Work (Channel Islands) Limited (“LAW” “we” “our” “us”) may collect, use, process, and store personal information about you.
LAW understands and respects your rights to privacy, and we are committed to ensuring security and confidentiality of your personal data and the processing of that data by applying appropriate technical and organisational measures to achieve that objective.
Our website may include links to third-party websites, plug-ins, and applications. Clicking on those links or enabling those connections may allow third parties to collect or share data about you. We do not control these third-party websites and are not responsible for their privacy statements. When you leave our website, we encourage you to read the privacy notice of every website you visit.
LAW is registered as data controller with the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner and its office is based at 22 Seale Street, St Helier, Jersey. What information do we collect about you?
The information we collect, use, store and transfer might include:
- Identity and contact details including your name, title, address, email address, where you work;
- Your IP address, browser details, and information regarding what pages are accessed on our website;
- Details required so that we can meet our legal and regulatory requirements, such as anti-money laundering legislation;
- Financial information, such as payment related information;
- Meetings or visits to our premises, or attendance on our training sessions; or
- Marketing and communication details, which includes your preferences in receiving marketing from us and/or your communications preferences.

We are concerned to protect the privacy of children aged 16 or under. If you are aged 16 or under‚ please get your parent/guardian’s permission beforehand whenever you provide us with personal information.
How we collect the data
We collect data your data from different sources such as:
- Directly from you when you interact with us;
- When you instruct us to provide advice;
- From documents you provide us;
- Visits to, and purchases from, our website;
- When you subscribe to our newsletters, training courses or to receive our publications;
- When you apply for employment with us;
- Attending one of our seminars or training sessions; or
- When you engage in business dealings with us or when you purchase a product from us through the website. However, in this last instance, your card information is not held by us, it is collected by our third-party payment processors. Our payment processors specialise in the secure online capture and processing of credit/debit card transactions.
Fair and lawful processing of data
We have set out below, in a table format, a description of all the ways we plan to use your personal data, and which of the lawful processing conditions we rely on to do so. We have also identified what our legitimate interests are where appropriate.

We will normally only use your personal data for the above purposes, unless we reasonably consider that we need to use it for another reason and that reason is compatible with the original purpose.
In addition, we may process your personal data without your knowledge or consent, where this is required or permitted by law.
Automated individual decision-making
No personal data provided to us will be the subject of automated decision making.
We may use your personal data to form a view on what we think you may want or need, or what may be of interest to you. This is how we decide which of our services and vacancies may be relevant for you.
You will receive marketing communications from us in respect of our business and our services if you are an existing client of ours, have requested information from us, enlisted with us and, in each case, you have not opted out of receiving that marketing.
You can ask us to stop sending you marketing messages at any time by following the opt-out links on any marketing message sent to you or by contacting our Managing Director.
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
We may make use of additional information about you when it is available from external sources to help us with our due diligence procedures (e.g. we may also use your personal information to detect and reduce fraud and credit risk).
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
While you visit our online purchasing site, we will track:
- Products you’ve viewed: we will use this to, for example, show you products you’ve recently viewed;
- Location, IP address, and browser type: we will use this for purposes like estimating taxes and shipping; or
- Shipping address: we will ask you to enter this so we can, for instance, estimate shipping before you place an order, and send you the order.
When you purchase from us, we will ask you to provide information including your name, billing address, shipping address, email address, phone number, credit card/payment details, and optional account information like username and password. We will use this information for purposes, such as, to:
- Send you information about your account and order;
- Respond to your requests, including refunds and complaints;
- Process payments and prevent fraud;
- Set up your account for our store;
- Comply with any legal obligations we have, such as calculating taxes;
- Improve our store offerings; or
- Send you marketing messages, if you choose to receive them.
If you create an account, we will store your name, address, email and phone number, which will be used to populate the checkout for future orders.
We generally store information about you for as long as we need the information for the purposes for which we collect and use it, and we are not legally required to continue to keep it. For example, we will store order information for 8 years for tax and accounting purposes. This includes your name, email address and billing and shipping addresses.
We will also store comments or reviews, if you choose to leave them.
Will we disclose your data?
We may have to share or transfer your personal data with the parties set out below:
- Our data processors who provide services in relation to the running of our business systems;
- Between group companies within the LAW group in performance of services;
- Professional bodies and LAW’s business partners in the performance of services contracted and conducted under the necessary confidentiality and security obligations;
- Competent authorities as required by law;
- Service providers based within the Channel Islands, UK, wider European Economic Area (“EEA”), or outside the EEA who provide client insurance, banking, payment or online banking payment arrangements, IT, payroll bureau, social media, marketing, and system or administration services including background checks;
- Event partners who assist us with organising events and marketing those events, based in the Channel Islands, UK, wider EEA, or outside the EEA;
- Our professional advisers including, lawyers, bankers, auditors and insurers based in the Channel Islands, UK, or EEA who provide, banking, legal, insurance, and accounting services; or
- Third parties to whom we may choose to sell, transfer, or merge parts of our business or our assets. Alternatively, we may seek to acquire other businesses or merge with them. If a change happens to our business, then the new owners may use your personal data in the same way as set out in this privacy notice.
We do not allow our third-party service providers to use your personal data for their own purposes and only permit them to process your personal data for specified purposes and in accordance with our instructions.
Where the destination of the data transfer is outside the EEA and does not include a third country that has an “adequacy/equivalence” status, as recognised by the EU Commission, we would always ensure that appropriate safeguards in place, utilising the standard contractual clauses as outlined by the Information Commissions Office.
We will only retain your personal data for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, contractual, accounting, or reporting requirements. To determine the appropriate retention period for personal data, we consider: the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the personal data; the potential risk of harm from unauthorised use or disclosure of your personal data; the purposes for which we process your personal data, and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means; and the applicable legal requirements. Accuracy, security and your legal rights
We aim to ensure that we only process accurate and up-to-date information, and we require your assistance to do so. Therefore, if your information changes please let us know.
We have put in place appropriate security measures to prevent your information from being accidentally lost, used, or accessed in an unauthorised way. Any sensitive information (such as credit or debit card details) is encrypted and protected with 168 Bit encryption on SSL. When you are on a secure page, a lock icon will appear on the bottom of web browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer. In addition, we limit the access of employees, agents, contractors, and other third parties to your information on a business need-to-know basis.
Non-sensitive details (your email address etc.) are transmitted normally over the Internet, and this can never be guaranteed to be 100 per cent secure. As a result, while we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of any information you transmit to us, and you do so at your own risk. Once we receive your information, we make our best effort to ensure its security on our systems. Where we have given (or where you have chosen) a password which enables you to access certain parts of our websites, you are responsible for keeping this password confidential. We ask you not to share your password with anyone.
LAW has put in place procedures to deal with any suspected personal data breach and will notify you and any applicable regulator of a breach where it is legally required to do so.
Under certain circumstances, you have rights under data protection laws in relation to your personal data. These rights are set out below and if you wish to exercise any of the rights please contact our Managing Director. Identification will also be requested for security.
You will not have to pay a fee to access your personal data, or to exercise any of the other rights. However, we may charge a reasonable fee if your request is clearly unfounded, repetitive, or excessive. Alternatively, we may refuse to comply with your request in these circumstances.
Your legal rights are as follows:
- Request access to your personal data (commonly known as a “data subject access request”). This enables you to receive a copy of the personal data we hold about you and to check that we are lawfully processing it;
- Request correction of the personal data that we hold about you. This enables you to have any incomplete or inaccurate data we hold about you corrected;
- Request erasure of your personal data. This enables you to ask us to delete or remove personal data where there is no good reason for us continuing to process it. You also have the right to ask us to delete or remove your personal data where you have successfully exercised your right to object to processing (see below);
- Object to processing of your personal data where we are relying on a legitimate interest (or those of a third party) and there is something about your particular situation which makes you want to object to processing on this ground as you feel it impacts on your fundamental rights and freedoms. You also have the right to object where we are processing your personal data for direct marketing purposes;
- Request restriction of processing of your personal data. This enables you to ask us to suspend the processing of your personal data in certain circumstances. For example, if you want us to establish its accuracy or the reason for processing it;
- Request the transfer of your personal data to you or to a third party; or
- Withdraw consent at any time where we are relying on consent to process your personal data. If you withdraw your consent, we may not be able to provide our services to you.

You have the right to make a complaint at any time with the Data Protection Authority through the Officer of the Information Commissioner on +44 1534 716530.
