Emma joined LAW at the end of 2023 and brings over 25 years of data protection experience with her. After starting her career as a data protection officer in the public sector, she moved to work in the regulatory office as Deputy Registrar for Jersey in 2002.
Emma was the Information Commissioner for Jersey and Guernsey until the islands separated offices and she was appointed Data Protection Commissioner for the Guernsey office. In her role as Commissioner, she worked with a team responsible for implementation, oversight, and adequacy assessment for the new GDPR-standard legal framework for the islands.
Throughout her career, Emma has been committed to driving high standards of ethical and legal data handlings and encouraging more inclusive and accessible conversations around the role of data in our lives. She is a strong advocate of cultural engagement and has spearheaded several community-wide initiatives to support social and economic benefits that come with effective data protection.
In January 2024, Emma was appointed as Chief Commissioner for the Data and Marketing Commission, which she undertakes on a part-time basis. At LAW, Emma advises boards of directors on having robust and holistic data governance and privacy strategies. She also coaches and mentors data leads on adequate data governance programmes and ethical solutions to support high standards of compliance.
