Who needs this training?
All care staff working within the care industry who are required to understand the principles and process of the Capacity and Self-Determination (Jersey) Law 2016. Care staff may be responsible for assessing the capacity of an individual and be required to make decisions in their best interest.
Why is this training required?
This training is described by Jersey Care Commission, (“JCC”), in their care standards, as a statutory and mandatory training requirement for staff working within the care industry.

- To understand the five core principles that underpin the law and the way they affect how the law is understood and used in practice.
- To be aware of the assessment of capacity and understand the best interest decisions process on behalf of a person who lacks capacity.
- Understanding roles and responsibilities when providing care and treatment to a person who lacks capacity.
- Being aware of what constitutes restraint when providing care to a person who lacks capacity.
