Capacity and Self-Determination – Introduction to Law and Carer responsibilities

Who needs this training?

All Care staff need to be aware of the principles of the Capacity and Self-Determination Law, understand what a capacity assessment consists of and be aware of best interest decision making. This training is conversational and interactive and based on a case study which demonstrates the process of establishing if someone has capacity or not. Most importantly the training is specifically designed for Jersey legislation. CPD Accredited.

Why is this training required?

This training is described by Jersey Care Commission (JCC) in their care standards, as a statutory and mandatory training requirement for staff working within the care industry.

Learning Outcomes
    • To understand the five core principles that underpin the law and the way they affect how the law is understood and used in practice.
    • To be aware of the assessment of capacity and understand the best interest decisions process on behalf of a person who lacks capacity.
    • Understanding roles and responsibilities when providing care and treatment to a person who lacks capacity.
    • Being aware of what constitutes restraint when providing care to a person who lacks capacity.
